This collection contains papers collected and created by Emma E. Fairhurst, her husband Albert Fairhurst, and Albert's father Guy Fairhurst. The papers include records of various civic associations in Ward, Colorado, where Emma and Albert operated the Columbia Hotel. Several of the folders contain correspondence and other papers regarding mining claims in the Ward mining district--in particular, litigation over the Fairhursts' Mermaid mining claim in the 1930s. The bulk of the collection consists of incoming personal and business correspondence and papers of Emma E. Fairhurst.

Albert L. and Emma E. Fairhurst owned and operated the Columbia Hotel in Ward, Colorado. Albert's father, Guy Fairhurst, moved to Colorado in 1859 and worked as a miner in Magnolia and elsewhere.
